Help Selecting Neat D3 or D5?

Post by image0r »

Happy New Year.

I am looking for my first robot vaccum to use in my house that is about 1800 square feet. I have a mix of carpet and tile. Additionally, I have two labs who shed pretty bad. I am mainly interested in being able to schedule through the wifi app and hopefully have smart things support further down the road. Currently, my whole house from; the switches, garage doors, locks is wired through z-wave/samsung smart things.

I am unsure if the side brushes would be beneficial to remove hair off the baseboards. I was eyeing the D3 unit. However, I am open to any suggestions/advice you might have.

Thanks for your time!

Have you looked at the Samsung 9350 WiFi robot?

I have. The Samsung is bit out of my price range. Trying to stay below $700, if at all possible.

The lower end Powerbot Essential with WiFi (but not Select-a-Room mapping) is $699 at Best Buy, U.S.
Their batteries are expensive, over $150, but supposedly last a long time -- too soon for any replacements needed to tell. Higher capacity for larger brush intake, not unreasonable. I like the permanent filter system.
No side brush though, if you are into that.

The 9350 can also climb higher thresholds. See the mod I made on Powerbot if getting one.

1800sq is right on the limit of what a D3 can do. On that basis I would be looking at the D5. I'm also really interested in the edge performance of the D3 vs the D5. For me it's alot of extra money to just have a side brush.

When using one of these robots the first time, attention is needed to the particulars of the furnishing and flooring, which can present problems and sometimes fixed with little additions discussed in various threads, for different cases. It may be necessary to try one and return it if necessary. A common problem is carpeting too thick or slippery for the robots, where I find the larger wheels on Samsung an advantage, but every place is different. Shag rugs and fringed rugs can disqualify all robots. Overhead pinches, low lamp bases and tubular or cantilever chair legs, lots of narrow straight chair leg spaces, various tight spaces, lidar vs camera guidance, can all be involved.
With dog hair the older Neato's without the improved "D" model bearing from Vorwerk should be avoided despite bargains.

Does the mapping function in the app work on the D3? Also, can you simply upgrade battery to D5 version at a later time? I have upgraded all my previous roomba's and current XV-21 with the lithium power batteries, so I imagine this isn't a long term issue. Side brush, run time and find me feature seem to be only real difference that means anything to me. I should be able to get some run statistics from Smartthings API interface. Oh, also hoping Neato announces Alexa extension to D3 and D5 this week at E3 since the botvac connected already has this working. Was hoping to get from Bed Bath and Beyond with 20% off dropping price down to near $300.

No mapping on D3 or D5, but D5 has cleaning history

Guys, I would buy the D3 model personally, which I just did. I got at Target with a $50 gift certificate, making the total cost only $350. So far I have had no connectivity problems, and was able to connect to my smart things home controller thanks to the Neato API and the programming of Alex on the smart things platform. I am still looking forward to Neato releasing their Alexa skill to the D3 and D5 models to get access to several additional commands, however I can start and stop the robot now by voice with only a two second delay. The D3 and D5 models appear to have one flaw right now however and that is that the cliff sensors appear to be too sensitive for cherry hardwood floor. This is not an issue at all with my X-21 model. I will post details In a separate topic, however, I am hoping Neato fixes quickly wth a firmware update.

The battery is barely enough to clean my first floor which is entirely hardwood but only about 900 ft2, but for $70 you can by the upgraded battery, which double run time and still be $130 ahead.
