Interesting ... The Electrolux UK YouTube channel also links to these videos - so hopefully the Electrolux MotionSense ERV5100IW vacuum may also be available in the UK.

Re: New robot from Electrolux - Electrolux Motionsense
Electrolux STILL proudly claim (in several places on their UK website at least) to have developed and marketed THE FIRST EVER robotic cleaner... as we know, the Trilobite. That was back in the year 2001. Today, they mention absolutely NOTHING about this new MotionSense cleaner, even though it's supposedly going to be launched in just a few weeks time! The thing is, since the Trilobite was launched, Electrolux has dismantled many of its actual design and manufacturing plants, and much of its wares today are simply imported cheap far-eastern tat branded as Electrolux, or AEG, or Zanussi, or Fridgidaire.davidelewis wrote:Interesting ... LIke Hoovers own recent efforts at marketing a robotic cleaner, I see this Electrolux MotionSense as nothing more than a short-term, cynical attempt to market yet another Chinese designed and made cleaner imported by the container-load using one of their "quality" brand names to see if the idea flies. At least the original Electrolux Trilobite was an innovative, original, fresh, ground-up (mostly) in-house design built with principles and quality in mind, and built to high standards in their own factories (or at least under their own watchful eye)... Electrolux just doesn't do that kind of quality stuff anymore*. Personally, I'd avoid this... and I'll wager good money no robotic cleaner bearing the Electrolux/AEG/Zanussi brand-name will survive more than a year or two simply because others A) have an established lead and B) actually care enough to specialise in that market and are prepared to invest in and develop that technology. Sad to say, but Electrolux today is simply interested in branding (mostly) cheaply-made, mass-market, quick-buck fodder.
*Electrolux UK was, until around the mid-1990's, a proper manufacturing plant employing thousands and extending to maybe 100 acres. Today, the main manufacturing site is now new housing, with just a small Head Office remaining which still bears the Electrolux brand-name, but where they simply shuffle the import paperwork and do sod-all else.
2 x Karcher RC3000 (2005 & 2012), Trilobite ZA1 (2005), Navibot 8855 (2010)

Re: New robot from Electrolux - Electrolux Motionsense
The appliance industry outgrew the original companies earlier in the decade with General Electric selling off their consumer business and venerable Maytag being sold as well. They've gone to "brand consolidators" like Iconic Brands.
The old Sylvania electronics brand sold for advertising. The european vacuum robot sold in the U.S. is Miele. For some odd reason Vorwerk Kobold has not sought or found practical a U.S. presence. Lot of competition. Dyson remans a prominent vacuum maker. It is somewhat just a breakup of old oligopolies from an earlier tech era, like the deregulation of airlines -- now consolidating again (but still engaging in price wars!). German kitchen appliances big here, Bosch, higher end.

Some stats from the info we have:
* Triangular shape with one side brush
* 210mm wide brush in front
* Sound level 75dB
* 60 minutes battery time
* 3 hours to charge
* 2500mAh Li-ion battery
* Automatic self charging (wonder if this means it will resume cleaning if out of battery?)
* Scheduling and spot cleaning.
* No app or wifi-support.
* Virtual wall (only the grey model)
* Remote control (only the grey model)
* Weight 2.7Kg
* 0.5litre big dustbin.
* Can handle up to 2cm high obstacles.
* Price 4500 (white) 5000 (grey) SKR .. = around 527$ / 585$ inc. 25% taxes.
Uses IR instead of Sonar (Trilobite)
Seem to use edge cleaning and then random bouncing to clean , not that intelligent .
I still have a Trilobite running at home , 10 years old and still going strong. Not that impressed with this new model. And I bought a new Neato Botvac D75 yesterday
(D75 costs 140$ less than this new robot)

Re: New robot from Electrolux - Electrolux Motionsense
The old Trilobite was important in having larger wheels which could navigate better on carpets, now reproduced uniquely in Samsung's Powerbot. Some carpets are slippery, with wax materials or what not in the fibers, besides thickness of the pile. Neato's can use a glider cardboard plate addition underneath for some cases, other thread, but Samsung handles it -- at a higher price...and a higher profile which will not fit under as many sofa designs. There is always some furniture nothing fits under. All a matter of personal situation and preference.
This ersatz Electrolux seems poor compared to Xiaomi's inexpensive offering from China, one of their substantial firms in this case.

Re: New robot from Electrolux - Electrolux Motionsense
I think the reason Vorwerk is not in the USA is they own part of Neato Robotics. If Neato goes under maybe Vorwerk will re-brand the Neato and enter the US market.

Re: New robot from Electrolux - Electrolux Motionsense
Under robotic vacuums on Amazon U.S., a whole bunch of unknown brand early Roomba imitations can be seen under $200. There is no sign of cameras or lasers on this Electrolux. The battery is smaller than higher end robots with guidance. Hard to see how it would be much more than these very inexpensive imports listed at Amazon.

Re: New robot from Electrolux - Electrolux Motionsense
Interesting ... It appears to have a brush similar to Neato and navigate similar to older Roomba (sequencing through cleaning patterns with minimal smarts). The integrated dust bin looks pretty cool.

side brush seems magnetic mounted (similar to Neato Botvac)
main brush bristles doesn't look stiff
large filter
virtual wall pretty bulky (similar to Samsung's)
docking station bulky too
overall, it looks pretty solid (dimensions: 34cmx9cm, weight 3.8kg)
for around $520 will will get randome-style navigation
