Post by dura321 »

 Are you ready for this! IROBOTS next gen roombas will be able to activated by cell phone or wireless remote ans will speak as opsed to beebing as well as be able to down load tones and possibly songs. They will also be adding interchangable face plates to them that you may be able to customize by download to IROBOT. They are also attempting longer running power maybe 4 rooms. Roomba may also able to upload to wireless router when it is full or needs manitenance. Get very excited they will attempt to lower the price some

Hmm.

Methinks they should be ironing out remaining "features" (read bugs) in the current models.

I'm sure everybody here has a pet peeve or two:

o Noise
o Battery life
o releasing the roomba hacking kit
o easier to clean around the wheels
o cost

Anybody else?

(Don't get me wrong -- I love my roomba as a vacuum cleaner. But I also hate creeping featuritis.)

I too would like to know where you got your info. How would you turn your Roomba on from you cell phone?

Maybe Bluetooth... so then you would have to be close to the Roomba.

Also, not really improvements on functionality (if true at all) more cosmetic..

I believe he's refering to another robotic vacuum. I think I read somewhere about the robot that you are talking about, but it wasn't Roomba. Was it the Cleanmate version 2.0? I'm not sure but it's not the next Roomba.

Well. That's the interesting part isn't it. As far as I know getting a PIC to talk to a cell phone isn't that hard(damn, i wish i had a NORMAL cell). So, All Irobot would need to do is sell the user a pager like device in the roomba that with a monthly subscription(very small due to small amount of pages) it would accept incoming calls and if they matched a known whitlist(updated via computer?) then it would turn on/off depending on the button pressed by the user. Of course if u didn't want to pay a monthly fee it would just not work(the roomba would still function)

Once you have the SCI in place, adding a Bluetooth is a trivial task

I am suprised at all your tech interest and thought that interchangeable and customizable face plates would peak most intrest.

The virtual walls need some work. They send a pretty wide beam. It should be more narrow. They should also include a visual beam (even if only when a button is pushed). It's kind of "virtual wall ruolettt" situation when setting up these units.

Customizable face plates are a joke...

What did you think of the options of music while roomba was working? Me i think that would wear after a while and IROBOT would be stuck with an investment that would become a burden.

One of my suggestions was: "less noisy".
If I want music I turn on the stereo :)
